The Lao Chai – Ta Van trail is about 12 km and suits travellers of average fitness. A little preparation makes it much more enjoyable.
Checklist
- Hiking shoes or trainers with good grip.
- A light rain jacket – Sa Pa weather changes fast.
- A warm layer (November–February can drop below 5°C).
- Small cash for handicrafts in the villages.
When to go
Water season (May–June) and harvest season (mid-September to early October) are when the terraces look their best.
